    Visitors Get First Tailwheel Flight!

John and his son, Matt Baumgartner from Illinois stopped by GVE hoping to find a few fellow pilots for a chat. Not only did they find fellowship but ended up having root beer floats with home made ice cream and a first class flight tour of Orange County Virginia in the Champ.

John Baumgartner, from Illinois, takes his first tail wheel flight. Caleb flew from the back seat and John got first hand experience flying the Champ.

Matt Baumgartner, John's son, was the experienced one as he had had time in a biplane. He also got his turn at the stick with Caleb Glick and a few wing-overs.

The picture below is Judith and Richard Whitmore as they view the banners made by Dennis Harbin of Rag Bag Aeroworks using pictures from their brother Tom Whitmore from Florida.Whitmore Visit

We were fortunate to have one of Richard Whitmore’s sons and his wife visit GVE recently. Richard Whitmore ran the Gordonsville Municipal Airport from 1945 – 1971.  His family, including a son, Tom Whitmore from Florida, has been the source for some of our most valuable information and pictures about the airport.

Richard Whitmore’s son, Richard and his wife, Judith, visited after seeing the Bluebird Aerodrome website.  They came to share more information about the history and memories of the airport.  We were thrilled and honored to have them visit.  We are hoping to be able to create a wall of pictures and information about the airport from much of what they have contributed as a family.

Tad Coffin and his son Jack with his new flying partner, Sesame!Sesame

Have you noticed something pecking on the ground around Tad Coffin's airplane? Have you seen something flying past your hangar that wasn't a plane or the usual bird?  Maybe it was Sesame! Sesame was orphaned when her parental chicken was devoured by a local fox (or so it is believed).  Who stepped in to resuce her? Ted Coffin. She flys everywhere with him and has become quite the topic of conversation at all the FBO's. He brings her with him when he comes to GVE and goes flying. She loves to eat finch seed and bread.

Tad Coffin owns a 172 hangared at GVE.  It has a paint scheme designed by Tad. He designs and makes english saddles. If you see him, stop by and say hi and bring some chicken feed!
