We have found documentation and charts to support GVE's existence as early as 1937. We believe it may have been active prior to being on charts in 1937 and currently seek information relating to it being used as part of a mail route.

ANOTHER VIEW OF THE 1933 HANGAR!
Grand News!!! We now have several pictures dating our oldest hangar to 1933! Thanks to Tom Whitmore of Florida. Tom's Dad, Richard (Dick) Whitmore leased the airport from 1945-1971. The pictures were part of Dick Whitmore's collection he gathered over the years when he leased the Gordonsville Municipal Airport.

We have purchased a 1940 chart showing GVE located at its orginal site where it is currently in use (We found the map at Sun and Fun this year!). The current operating field is often confused with the reliever field several miles away. This map shows both fields.
Burnie Herndon has also found copies of the orginal charter document for GVE stating it was orginally chartered in 1937. We know it was in operation prior to being chartered in 1937 and are still looking for newspaper articles or pictures to show it in operation prior to the charter of 1937.

Special Thanks
Caleb Glick, Burnie Herndon, Buck Carlton and others for their help with finding documentation to support GVE's place in history.

...in progress on the historical marker for GVE.
Bob and Faith Olen both shared a passion for aviation. When Bob met Faith he was a retired Chief Warrant Office 04 from the Navy. He was building a Celebrity Biplane. Faith was just looking into purchasing a kit and had been building small models of airplanes. Later, Bob gave her his Navy flight jacket as a pre-engagement gift. After they were married they had a hangar at GVE (Gordonsville, VA) where they happily flew their champ – which was actually a present, from Bob, to Faith – and worked on the Celebrity together. Bob always wanted to place an historical marker for GVE to help preserve its place in the history of aviation. Bob died of a heart attack March 6, 2006. In Bob’s memory, and as a memorial, we are working on getting the historical marker he always wanted placed at GVE.
